Helen immigrated to America in 1906 at eleven years old after the death of her mother. She was accompanied by her 28 year old cousin Gunda Gundersen. Helen was adopted by Mr. & Mrs. John B. Moore of Aberdeen, South Dakota and received her education there. She taught school in South Dakota for one year, then moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where she worked for the company that eventually became 3M.
She married Daniel B. Conrad. In their early marriage Daniel and Helen lived on a homestead in Montana. But, the Montana wilderness must not have been a good place for aspiring artist, Daniel, to sell his art, as they moved back to Minnesota by 1925. Helen and the children accompanied Daniel across the US as he traveled for his artwork. Daniel died in 1946 after he fell from scaffolding while painting a mural. In the early 1950’s Helen, along with her youngest daughter and granddaughter, moved to Southern California, where her other daughter and family lived. In 1956, at the age of 62, after a courtship by correspondence, Helen moved to Montana and married her widowed brother-in-law, Gert Petersen. Gert was the husband of Ruth Jenssen, sister of Daniel (Jenssen) Conrad.
