Hans Jacob Pavels was born in 1789 in Drobak, Norway. His father, Jacob, held the honorary title of Etatsrad (Councilor), President i Chritiansand and was from a family that included several generations of Educators and Priests. His first cousin, Bishop Claus Pavels, was a Norwegian priest and diarist whose diaries from 1812–1822 are an important source for the cultural and biographical history of Norway.
On his mother’s side of the family he was descended from the noble families Norway and noble families of Denmark who were originally sent by the King of Denmark to govern Norway.
